The Cat's Eye was designed to be the replacement for the carrier launched
Hawkeye II. Unlike its predecessor, the Cat's Eye was developed to operate both in space and
an atmosphere, though it did not posses transatmospheric capabilities. Unarmed, the Cat's Eye's
purpose is reconnaissance. To this end it mounts a large, rotating radar and early warning system
over the main fuselage which when used in concert with ship-borne sensors systems, can increase
the overall coverage of allied forces. The SDF-1 used these ships to great effect, especially
when its long-range radar was damaged by the Zentraedi in deep space. The Cat's Eye continued
to be built and operated well after the war in both the REF and ASC until it was finally replaced
in those forces by the VF-6J Alpha and the EC-32 Eyrie EWACS Shuttle respectively.
